Can you believe #metoo is one year old? We are pleased to inform you there is light at the end of the tunnel. Research by The Fawcett Society has identified there has been a shift in attitudes to sexual harassment following the #MeToo movement. Their findings, supported by law firm Hogan Lovells, revealed 53% said that understanding of what is seen as acceptable behaviour has changed. We’ve all been there is a severe laugh or cough during your period and your tampon moves, you feel the rush of your period flooding out or even your cup shifting if it hasn’t been inserted right😳 this is especially worse for girls who experience period poverty and cannot afford to prepare for their period and especially if its irregular and comes more than once a month. It is so important to have an area or person they can go to get what they need without judgement or being afraid but unfortunately this isn’t always possible😢 the needs to be more access for women especially this in education as so many miss out during that time if the month or have to reply on unsanitary supplies like rolled socks🤢 if we can implement reusable products of these girls it could make all the difference even if they had to wash those pads in a sink at least they have something! One year on from #metoo what’s changed? A recent survey over half of respondents said their employer had not attempted to combat sexual harassment in their workplace and 56% said their organisation did not have a sexual harassment policy, or at least were not aware of one existing. Theresa May has announced plans that could result in BAME pay gap reporting becoming mandatory. While compulsory gender pay gap reporting dominated headlines earlier this year, the BAME pay gap was largely unreported – both by organisations themselves and by the media. Perhaps this is due to there currently not being a legal requirement for organisations to report their BAME pay gap. Has sexism in the workplace more palatable so more comfortable to talk about? Is the suggestion of racism in the workplace, brought to light by BAME pay gap reporting, simply too sensitive a subject? And then, of course, there are those for whom sexism and racism in the workplace intersect – how do we tackle intersectionality in pay? These are complex issues, but ones not to shy away from. How have UK workplaces responded to the #MeToo movement? Not that well according to a recent survey by law firm Slater and Gordon. The survey of 2,000 women revealed 37% respondents had been sexually harassed at work in the last 12 months – and as well as being subjected to unwanted behaviour, 39% reported witnessing a colleague being harassed. Questions have been raised over the value of anonymous reporting, for example can action be taken when reports are anonymous? At what point is the identity of the complainant and the accused revealed? Sadly, distrust that complaints will be taken seriously or fear of raising your hand and reporting a grievance prevail. So how do we tackle bullying in the workplace? One of a number of solutions is promoting diversity. A diverse and inclusive workplace prevents employees seeing others as “other”; rather it fosters an appreciation of difference and optimises difference to enhance the profitability of the organisation. What constitutes workplace bullying? Bullying isn’t defined in the same way as harassment. Primarily, it’s not against the law. Harassment is an illegal practice that involves unwanted behaviour or comments relating to an individual’s protected characteristics as defined by the Equality Act 2010; for example, someone’s sex, sexuality, gender, age, race, religion, beliefs, disability, marital status or maternity/paternity and pregnancy. Bullying tends to be defined as repeated acts of intimidation, hostility and humiliation. But regardless of the legalities, bullying is as devastating to the individual as harassment. Here’s an important question: can your managers manage? How did they get to their management position? By being a longstanding employee? By being highly skilled at their role? By being an inspirational leader who can bring out the best in others? Management training is fundamental. It prevents unnecessary incidences of bullying, which often occur when a manager doesn’t have the skills to manage their team nor equipped to deal with being responsible for the performance of others. Training to communicate effectively as a manager is also key. Want to do everything to prevent bullying in your workplace. When was the last time you updated your rule book? Policies and procedures: dry, dull, redundant…? They don’t have to be. They should be informed by your culture and your culture should be lived and breathed by your people. Policies and procedures are not just a box-ticking exercise and your employee handbook not just a set of rules on how to behave. They’re a reference point for everything your organisation is already doing and your people have already internalised. They’re also a helpful advisory tool for employees should they be faced with a situation or a colleague that misaligns to the company culture. Today, I wore ditched my regular Friday outfit of jeans and a tshirt and wore all black to participate in #blackfriday Why? Because in 2012, when I was attending a conservative Christian college, I was sexually assaulted by another student. When I reported the incident to the deans office, they strongly discouraged me from calling it an assault because they didnt want me to ruin a life by telling the truth about what happened to me. Then they kicked me out of the school, using the justification that I had broken the no touching rule of the university. The dean of students told me that I may have said no, but I obviously didnt say it loud enough or try hard enough to resist, because otherwise I could have stopped it from happening. They failed me in all my classes, less than a month before the end of the semester, and still charged me full price for my tuition. When I went back for one more semester because thats what I was told to do, I had to attend weekly counseling to discuss my sin issues. Now, 6+ years later, I am standing up not only for myself but for every victim who had been scared, ignored, silenced, and discredited. #kavanaugh may well be confirmed tomorrow, but we, the women who have suffered, learned, and had enough, will NOT forget. We will remember this, and we will vote. Believe women, believe survivors. We are real people whos lives are forever altered by the violence perpetrated against us, and when you say that being a sexual predator is not enough to disqualify someone from the highest land in the court, or the presidency for that matter, you are telling us that our suffering does not matter. Enough is enough. I am done with grief. Its time for rage, and action. I beg of you, vote this year, and vote with me and my fellow survivors in mind. Our suffering is real, and our stories matter.
