Rolling Out the Sub-Occipital Muscles . TAG someone who you think this would help❗️ . The Suboccipital muscles (which include Rectus capitis posterior major, rectus capitis posterior minor, obliquus capitis inferior, and obliquus capitis superior) are 4 small muscles located right below the base of the skull/occiput of the head. They are running each in different angles connecting the top two vertebrae’s to the skull and to each other. . 📝 Trigger points are often seen within thes subboccipiatls secondary to whiplash injuries, FORWARD-HEAD POSTURE, emotional tension, or postural stress; which leads to the classic CERVICOGENIC HEADACHES. ⚫️When these muscles are triggered you may feel pain that feels like it’s inside of the head extending from the back of the head to the eye/forehead, it will typically hurt on only one side of the head. . The three upper suboccipitals on each side will primarily control upper cervical nodding/tilting, when afflicted with trigger points this motion can be limited. The lowest of the suboccipitals, obliquus capitis inferior, connects the top two vertebrae, where most of the rotation of the head occurs at (between C1 and C2). When this muscle is triggered one’s rotation may be limited and/or reproduce sharp neck pain with rotation of the neck. Here I demonstrate how to release the suboccipitals with a peanut. . 1️⃣find your suboccipitals right below my occiput then place it on the peanut. Then I begin to take the muscles through it’s range by passively chin tucking which will flex the upper cervical spine. 2️⃣move the ball slightly inferior to target more of the oliquus capitas inferior and begin to passively rotate my neck. . Notice how I passively go through the range with assistance of my hand vs. actively flex and rotate my neck. . ❌There are important neurovascular structures such as the vertebral artery and suboccipital nerve that exit the suboccipital triangle. Correcting C-posture👩‍💻 . 🏌🏽 Excessive thoracic spine flexion can be a result of lack of movements in the joint and/or tightness in the muscles that pull the shoulder forward or the thoracic spine into flexion (think pecs!). Here’s a set of foam roller exercises you can start with to help improve your thoracic spine extension. . ⛳️ Foam roll T/S extension is a great way to get the thoracic spine moving in the sagittal plane. You can put your hands behind your neck to support it. Keep your low back close to the ground and avoid letting your ribs flare. Hunt for the segments that are tight/hard to bend backwards over). . ⛳️ The second video is the T/S extension stretch adding in a kettlebell for an extra stretch. Same rules apply! Avoid over arching through your back, and don’t let your ribs flare. You’ll also feel a nice stretch through your lats.👌 . 👼Foam roll snow angels works as a dynamic pec stretch. The Bench Press . A conventional bench press uses pectoralis major muscle, anterior deltoid, coracobrachialis to horizontally adduct the shoulder. It also uses predominantly triceps brachii and anconeous to extend the elbows. Wider hand spacing places a greater emphasis on shoulder flexion and narrower hand spacing utilizes more elbow extension. Because of this, wider hand spacing is associated with training the pectorals and narrower hand spacing is associated with training the triceps. . 💭💭MINDSET💭💭 . . You may have seen this on my story already but despite being on a cut, I went for a 90% belted triple like a total fucking lunatic. Felt strong so went for it anyway 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ . . Im used to squatting real deep so only going to parallel felt like a half rep. I stood back up and just felt like I was only going to get three half reps so racked up. When I checked the video I was genuinely surprised to see parallel! It made me realise that if I hadnt let the little negative idea slip into my mind then I could have hit that triple, even if it was only to parallel. Hell, it might have even driven me to take that next rep a bit lower! . . Were all guilty from time to time of quitting on an exercise or a session because of a negative mindset but getting through that set or that session could be what turns it around for you. If youve set yourself a plan, get to the end of it. It doesnt even matter if you still feel crap when you leave - At least you got through it. Its definitely better than leaving half way through and feeling like crap anyway. . . Weights are the only thing to overcome in the gym. Dont be a barrier to yourself.

It is needed for spinal stability as well as for power transfer from the legs to the arms in any rotational movements. • This is an exercise called the dead bug that I like to use to retrain the core in a hip extended position. Perform on edge of lifting bench to allow your legs to go into hip extension. As all of my clients are well aware, the TRX is an incognito Devil... and one of my favourite alternative training tools. I firmly believe it is inherently important to incorporate not only different styles of resistance to your training, but also some form of plyometric training. My favourite go-to exercises are Rows (as pictured), Jump Squats (Plyometric God of an Exercise), Elevated Pushups, and “Roll Outs”. If you’ve never used a TRX before, definitely check out this beast of a contraption.
