I am taking little health break while reviewing my 20 hr training on the Principles of Ayurveda. The hips and shoulders are like these little puzzle boxes that Im constantly trying to figure out how to use properly.⠀ ⠀ My shoulders in Upward Bow have been a particular challenge. Alot of the cues I received for the shoulder position in this pose led me towards full external rotation of the arm, with the scapula spreading so the arms come up and over and I worked it like that for a long time. But I hit a real wall with the pose and started getting some shoulder pain. I think that cue might address very flexible people who tend to dump into their flexibility, but it wasnt working for me. Jo-Ann Oosterman has been practicing yoga longer then some of our younger teachers have been alive! We’re so lucky to have someone with her enormous depth of wisdom and experience here at Upward Dog.⠀ ⠀ We were talking about her yoga journey and we asked if she had any lessons to share. Heres what she said:⠀ ⠀ Just remember that Yoga is about what it feels like on the inside, not what it looks like on the outside.⠀ ⠀ When I first started doing yoga people were going to classes in sweatpants and t-shirts. Things have changed a lot since then. Alot of people get into yoga because of how beautiful it looks, and I understand that because that’s how I got into it as well, I saw my friend doing Sun Salutations on a camping trip (in the late 90’s, if you can believe it) and I thought they were so cool. But as you get a little older and learn a little bit more it becomes clear that Yoga is really about keeping you present, in the moment. It helps keep you in touch with yourself. It helps you to discover that most of what we need we already have inside, and even though it’s gotten trendy recently, it’s based on such an ancient science that we can always go deeper into it. ⠀ ⠀ One of the beautiful things about yoga is that no matter where you are, how old you are and no matter what condition your body is in you can do yoga. At any stage of your life and for the rest of your life. It’s not something that you have to stop. That’s why I’ve become so drawn to gentle and therapeutic styles, because it shows you just how much anyone can benefit from it. Flexibility is a complicated subject. When we think about physical flexibility we often think about the muscles ability to lengthen. But studies have now shown that a persons mobility is at least as affected by resistance in the bodys connective tissue - Fascia, Ligaments and Tendons - as resistance in the muscle. Additionally, studies have shown that much of the muscles ability to lengthen isnt really dictated by a permanent elongation of the muscle itself but rather by the nervous systems ability to relax its propensity to tense the muscle in anticipation of pain, a reflex which can be controlled through training. ⠀ ⠀ Yin Yoga addresses both of these factors. Poses are held passively for long periods of time to carefully load the bodies connective tissue and allow the nervous system to relax, releasing tension from the muscles. T E A R S O F J O Y ✨ While sitting in traffic yesterday, I unexpectedly felt overwhelmed with joy. Tears quickly poured down as a huge smile consumed half of my face. Has this ever happened to you? It sure is a unique feeling... Were somewhat trained that crying is a sign of sadness, maybe even weakness, but I have always been a believer in staying with your emotions - in letting the tears fall - why ever they may be falling. Doing so brings a kind of release. The emotional brain calms down and the reason behind the emotions is seen more clearly - resulting in more mindful reactions + actions. ❤️ After my little cry yesterday, I was SO excited to be back at @hamsayogacp and see everyone - Luther included (of course). So excited, I could barely contain myself for a yoga photo! 😝 Have a great day everyone!! xx

Think of how soft and supple a baby’s skin feels. Though we can’t always change the overall effects of time, weathering and aging we can work towards keeping our bodies as receptive and agile as possible. Though it might be nice, you don’t need a professional to do this to get some results. 👣 Try this self massage: 👣 Really, you just want to push, pull, rub, press, make circles GENTLY into the skin all over your foot, top and bottom. No need to push hard. Gentle pressure is enough. You should not create pain, or at least increase any pain (if already present) to your feet. 👣 Then, you might also like to twist and turn the forefoot as in the video. Move the ankle around a little. 👣 In the second video you’ll see how I thread my fingers between the toes. If you’re toes are really tight and stuck close together to begin with, you may have to gradually work up to this. I sure did! 👣 5 minutes and you’re done! Try to do this every day, or every other day and see the progress you too, can make. 👣 (If only doing this for a couple minutes I find you don’t need any cream, lotion or oil.
