I feel myself falling for fall 🧡🍂🍃🍁

Day 10/100. The first day in what seems like forever that I have been outside the majority of the day in the sun and have felt good about it. I see some people who are dreading the cold, and if you are one of them, I am sorry your summer is closing, but know that someone else is going to feel alive once more. Some may know that the summer has been a struggle for me - mentally, spiritually and physically. The past four months, I have been waiting for the cold to come back. I dont fake being depressed, but I also dont fight it. Its much easier to give in to its tight grip and retreat to a dark, quiet and cool room ignoring the world and the projects that have my name on them. Anyone who has never dealt with depression probably wont understand the lethargy that seems to never end and serious lack of enthusiasm and joy in anything, the low self-esteem and the dismal question of asking yourself why youre even alive. And I dont believe that is something you choose. If happiness is a choice, someone please teach me the art because I have never been able to choose joy, happiness or even contentment in any of my depressive phases. Everything seems bleak. The beauty of summer has been mostly non-existent. Despite the light, I have felt dark. Despite the active life, I have felt dormant. Not every day has been bad this summer, but the bad days seem to out number the good. But now I am slowly waking up. My dawn is coming and I am ready. So, this is me on a sunny, upper 60s day. I feel good. I feel happy. I feel alive. And I dont feel guilty about feeling okay. I actually worked outside on a project I have had in mind for a while. Who was this insanely happy woman on the west coast of Ireland? Now that I am home I have fallen into running around like crazy, feeling anxious, feeling depressed. I feel landlocked. I want the sea, I want green, I want to walk everywhere I go, I want to step out of the city and walk for 15 minutes and be in nature. We are finally getting autumn weather here in Minnesota. This is my bird Luka with his little nest box and mirror. However I am still depressed and trying to adapt to being home from Ireland. I know vacations are generally better than real life but The friendliness of people there, the simplicity of life, the lack of strip malls and traffic… I have never felt at home in my own country‘s culture. I’m sick of being poorer than everyone else, sick of that even mattering, sick of the crazy schedule we all keep here, just generally depressed. I know there are people in the aftermath of a hurricane and this makes me feel guilty for my lack of gratitude. Here’s to new beginnings. Today I did my G1 test wow not a big deal I’m in my 20s that’s what 16 year olds do right ? . Nope not for me! It is a big deal ! When I was 16 I got my liscence I did drivers ed , did my G2 test , failed cause I was too cautious and BAMB thats when my anxiety clung to driving like a barnacle to a whale. I barely drove after that and three years later my G1 expired. I was afraid of failure. To exponential proportions. . It’s taken me over a year to renew it. But today I did - and it was a huge step. ✨ . Remember your journey is valid wherever you are. . Also shoutout to @kate_speer for her incredible platform and always reminding me to be proud of the little accomplishments 💕

I’m not the kind of person to put a counter on my phone to keep track of how long it’s been since I self harmed. I tried it once. It didn’t take. I think it was back in high school, when it was easier to make it a few days then relapse. Now I just relapse and hope to hold off for a little bit. It’s a hard habit to break.

Sharing my struggles and truth on how I sometimes cope with my mental illness’s. I’m not proud, but this happens quite often and I’m trying to control it. But it’s hard once you leave one pain, you find another that helps the mental pain go away. I only cut my skin once and I still have the scar. I knew it wasn’t something I wanted to do. Parental guilt over medicating in your home. It’s something that I’ve never understoood. Why do parents— especially moms— feel guilty about medicating when we have kids? Because of the stigma. So ask yourself… is it really guilt? Or it is it fear of judgement? Answer honestly. It’s super important to make the disctinction, because this is the only way to evolve. Why are wine and coffee consumed? For the effects and taste— and both are celebrated and encouraged. (Coffee shops, wine bars, coffee farms, vineyards, etc.) They’re both natural, there are many different types of each and different ways to consume both. They both go through processes to achieve different flavors, effects etc. Both of the above are consumed in front of children all the time, strictly for their effects, not even as medication. So why would you feel guilty lighting up a plant completely in private out of your kid’s view? Stepping away from a supervised child to medicate responsibly is not a big deal. It’s no different than stepping away when you need time to yourself, or for a shower, to cook, run errands, go have brunch, Dr appointments, etc. Most those things take longer than medicating anyway. If stepping away from your child is not an option, smoking isn’t the only way to medicate. There are tinctures, topicals, edibles. There are also vape pens (no setup, no smoke, quick and easy), capsules, and so on. Really stop and think about all those parallels between coffee, wine, and cannabis. There are A LOT of them. And given those parallels, is what you’re feeling really guilt? Or fear? When we free ourselves and medicate without fear in our own homes, we’re also naturally more open to talking to our kids and educating them about cannabis. And education is crucial. Normalizing cannabis in our own homes IS breaking the stigma. It’s the first step, the most important one. Your aren’t a bad parent just because you use cannabis or medicate in private, in your own home that you share with your children. Period. 🌿

Yesterday I finally had my 1st appointment with the big fancy head doctor. It was amazing to watch her work, she very quickly got a grasp on my whole situation- Including what weve come to call my incedent or my head caving in. Weve had a lot of unanswered questions while i wait my turn to meet this woman, and while it probably will never be 100% sorted, it was encouraging to see anything tangable come from my first appointment. However I also heard a childhood abusers voice for the first time in eh 10 years or so...so safe to say Im still in my little brain cocoon. Thank you guys for being such an awesome support. OCD & ATTENTION Recent psychological research on the causes of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder have proposed that a critical impairment in OCD may be the ability to flexibly and intentionally shift attention adaptively for some desired goal. It is suggested that problems with cognitive flexibility may play a role in the symptoms and severity of OCD. According to the research, individuals with diagnosed OCD are able to direct their attention intentionally, but have difficulty shifting attention to new, relevant stimuli and away from an extraneous stimuli (Chamberlain et al., 2006). This impairment has also been found to be significant in first-degree relatives of OCD patients compared to healthy controls. Neuroimaging studies have extended this behavioural work on cognitive flexibility. Without being too technical, parts of the brain appear to be significantly less activated in OCD patients in reversal learning-based tasks (Remijnse et al., 2006). Importantly, people with OCD make more mistakes when switching between tasks than non-OCD individuals, which has been tied to reduced activation of the dPFC, lateral OFC, ACC, and caudate in the brain (Gu et al., 2008). It is clear that struggling with changing thoughts & attention is part of OCD. Challenging inflexibility and fixation thinking is important for your mental wellbeing & healthy functioning.
