@Regran_ed from @kholi - #leroijones Happy birthday in heaven to #AmiriBaraka born #LeRoiEverettJones on what would have been his 84th birthday. His physical presence may have left us, but he has left us so much to remember him by. He lives on forever. Amiri Baraka previously known as LeRoi Jones and Imamu Amear Baraka, Barakas own political stance changed several times, thus dividing his oeuvre into periods: as a member of the avant-garde during the 1950s, Baraka—writing as Leroi Jones—was associated with Beat poets like Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac; in the 60s, he moved to Harlem and became a Black Nationalist; in the 70s, he was involved in third-world liberation movements and identified as a Marxist. More recently, Baraka was accused of anti-Semitism for his poem “Somebody Blew up America,” written in response to the September 11 attacks. Baraka incited controversy throughout his career. He was praised for speaking out against oppression as well as accused of fostering hate. Critical opinion has been sharply divided between those who agree, with Dissent contributor Stanley Kaufman, that Baraka’s race and political moment have created his celebrity, and those who feel that Baraka stands among the most important writers of the twentieth century. In the American Book Review,Arnold Rampersad counted Baraka with Phyllis Wheatley, Frederick Douglass, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Richard Wright, and Ralph Ellison “as one of the eight figures . . . who have significantly affected the course of African-American literary culture.” To read the rest & learn more about this national treasure, go to: https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poets/amiri-baraka

🤯 My September #wrapup. I read only four books this month, because I had to go back to work, Im planning six events this fall in addition to the ones I have to do for my jobby job, I got all depressed and anxious about the aforementioned developments, and thus I didnt read as much. BUT. I read some great stuff. BUT. I dont feel inspired enough to explain why they were all great. So heres a new thing I just invented right now: a list in no particular order. LeRoi Jones (aka Amiri Baraka), The Dead Lecturer, 1968. Wow. Louise Erdich, The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse, 2001. Whoa. Adolfo Bioy Casares, Diary of the War of the Pig, 1969. Thanks, Kit. Ursula K. Le Guin, A Wizard of Earthsea, 1968. New reissue of Joe McPhee’s classic Nation Time just announced by @superiorviaduct — Joe performs “Nation Time, for real this time (in the error of Trump)” at our second annual benefit on Monday. Last chance for tickets!—link in our bio. . “Its been nearly five decades since Joe McPhee assembled a group of musicians to perform the weekend concerts that would become Nation Time, his debut LP. It was December 1970, thirty-one-year-old McPhee was inspired by Amiri Barakas poem Its Nation Time, and the students at Vassar College didnt know what hit them. What time is it? shouted the bandleader. Cmon, you can do better than that. What time is it?! Now is the time for a new generation of freaks to lose their shit when settling into the cushy beat of Shakey Jake and answer McPhees call with the only appropriate response: Its NATION TIME. – John Corbett . #joemcphee #nationtime #amiribaraka #leroijones #avantgardejazz #freejazz

Dutchman (1967) Directed By Anthony Harvey Written by the legendary Amiri Baraka (then LeRoi Jones) Dutchman is one of the great plays of the 20th Century, defining the One Act Play forever. Anthony Harvey’s treatment is faithful, effective and captures all the power of Baraka’s genius work on the knowledge and Fire we Black people in White Supremacy hide everyday to stay alive. It’s one of the (few) great film performances we ever got from the legendary Al Freeman JR. whose career was marginalized in cinema, and Shirley Knight as the films antagonist goes balls to the wall in a performance that gives bold a new meaning. Dutchman continues to be marginalized as a play and film, not surprisingly, acknowledge by those who know it and often picked from - its clear Jordan Peele used the base idea of the two main characters for his two leads in his film Get Out, Peele’s rendition far more watered down and made into entertaining spectacle - Baraka never cheapens racial horror in this work and Harvery obeys that faithfully leaving Dutchman as haunting now as ever. Regrann from @315nelsongeorge - If you have not read, hear of or are otherwise aware of #bluespeople by the late #leroijones (later #AmiriBaraka) then you really dont know or truely care about black music in America. It may have been published in 1963, but i find it incredibly relevant to understanding soul, funk, disco, jazz and hiphop. The lessons about the relationship of black music to America and how our music reflects our social/political/cultural conditions are still on point. I re read it every few years and always come away inspired, my critical mind cleansed and sharpened. I should have been asleep hours ago but the truth will keep you awake. #blackmusic #jazz #blues #swing #rocknroll #storytelling #perspective - #regrann

🖤 #ElLibroComoObraDeArte #AnneSexton #JohnBerryman #LeroiJones #SalasYMosqueraEditores

This right here 🔥 from 1968.... As history repeats itself! 💯 #thinkaboutit Leroi Jones Young Spirit House Movers and Players, from Inside Bed-Stuy, 1968 The young players embody the activist spirit of their driving force, poet and Black Arts Movement originator LeRoi Jones (Amiri Baraka). Using synched movements and poetry, the kids address various issues from inequality to the lack of a well-rounded black history curriculum in the schools. One girl states affectingly: “We are taught to hate ourselves…America, why did you bring us here?” But the underlying message from Jones through these kids is the importance of pride and self-empowerment.
